This is how you avoid the development of pressure ulcers by using micro movements.
People with a reasonably well functioning mobility change position in average every 10 minutes throughout the night. This happens because the body needs major or minor repositioning to accommodate blood flow, comfort, pressure distribution, respiration, etc.
Immobile clients and people with reduced sensorial function also need repositioning throughout the night. Especially if we are to prevent pressure ulcers and to provide better comfort.
Recent research in this domain shows that micro movements have a great and important meaning for the prevention of pressure ulcers. Bedridden people who experience frequent minor repositioning throughout the night are far less at risk of developing pressure ulcers, than bedridden people who lie completely still.
The repositioning concept ”the walking cushion” supports frequent and discreet repositioning. If the client lies on the back, place a small positioning cushion alternately for example under the shoulder and the hip, on both sides. If the client lies in lateral position, the micro movements can be made by alternately placing and removing a small positioning cushion under and from under the client’s abdomen.
Consequently, it is not always about positioning the client at a 30° angle or with a back support elevated at ca. 30°. Research shows that minor repositioning can also have a positive impact and be efficient in preventing pressure ulcers. Minor repositioning has at the same time the advantage of being more discreet and of being achieved without wakening the client. This supports an uninterrupted sleep for the bedridden, which is very important for the general health condition.
In order to provide positioning in line with the repositioning concept ” the walking cushion” we have developed a small positioning cushion, called LEJRELET Oval.
While developing LEJRELET Oval, the cushion has been i.a. tested on several patients at Hospice Sydvestjylland, where physiotherapist Annette Lauge concludes: “It is really easy to work with LEJRELET Oval. As opposed to many other positioning cushions, LEJRELET Oval remains where it is placed. The fabric provides an appropriate friction, which supports its easy moving, but at the same time, without it sliding. It is brilliant. In addition, it shapes on its own and provides a stable positioning. Our tests showed that micro positioning with LEJRELET Oval is enough.”
The Montebello care center in Helsingør municipality has also tested LEJRELET Oval. Physiotherapist Michelle Søe Boesen explains : ”Our moving and handling instructors were pleased with LEJRELET Oval. They are very impressed by the cushion and especially by how little effort they need in order to reposition with it. The clients wake up only slightly or not at all while being repositioned.” At the same time, Michelle Søe Boesen underlines that the surface of the cushion is very breathable. There is no moisture between skin and the cushion.”
The Montebello care center has described two cases, that particularly benefited from using LEJRELET Oval. One of them concerns a man in terminal stage, who could not lie in a certain position, because of the pain and contractures in his lower extremities. He was very hard to position and was at high risk of developing pressure ulcers. With LEJRELET Oval it was possible to position him painlessly and to avoid pressure ulcers. He also avoided being moved on an alternating air mattress.
The other case from Montebello care center concerns a woman, who ONLY wants to lie on her back. This poses an increased risk of developing pressure ulcers, but through minor repositioning with LEJERLET Oval, it has been possible to avoid pressure ulcers while allowing the women to lie as she pleases.
The tests of LEJRELET Oval have shown that the cushion can be used as much more than just ”the walking cushion”. Anette Lauge from Hospice Sydvestjylland suggests using it:
• as elbow support on an armrest or on a table
• as lumbar or back support
• between arm and thorax in lateral position
• between knees or feet
According to Anette Lauge, only imagination limits the use. “It is also good as head cushion in seated position, as it shapes around the head and does not slide down.”
LEJRELET Oval is made of the same high quality materials as the other LEJRELET products.
The cushion is filled with viscoelastic foam. The pressure relieving foam provides a large support surface, good pressure relief and high comfort for the bedridden person.
The fabric is carefully chosen, to be comfortable against the skin and to ensure it will not slide against the sheet. The fabric is stretchable in two ways, which ensures that the viscoelastic foam can work optimally. In addition, the fabric is:
• Eco-Tex, class 1
• Anti house mite treated
• Watervapour permeable
• Anti-bacteria treated
